General Farm Hand: Desert Weyr
Farm: Desert Weyr, Paonia
Job Title: General Farm Hand
Job Description: Desert Weyr, LLC is looking for a general farmhand for 2022. We are a small farm focused on producing top quality breeding stock, mutton and wool from our flock of Black Welsh Mountain sheep. This year we wish to plant some new trees in our old orchard that will require hands-on care. We have two locations, the main farm on Garvin Mesa and additional pastures and barns near Bowie that are used for hay production and a few cattle.
In the model of Joel Salatin’s layering of multiple businesses on the farm, we also want to support and help create new farm opportunities. Our ideal candidate will also be interested in running their own farming business that complements ours. Possible options include running a pastured poultry operation or vegetable farming. Those enterprises would be your own business, although we could provide barn space to brood chicks and some of the equipment for poultry. You would have access to portions of our land, some of the buildings and some of the equipment to develop your own business, but you must cover all your own expenses and labor for that business. The barn space and access to the land and equipment is part of your compensation.
The ideal candidate is willing to learn how we handle the sheep and cattle and work with us to continue to improve our farms using holistic practices. You must be able to lift and carry up to 60 pounds and walk long distances. You must be licensed and insured and have your own vehicle to travel between the two properties. You must learn quickly, and then work without much direct supervision, once you know how we want things done.
Work hours will be variable. During some parts of the season there are daily tasks. Some days will be from dawn to dusk and there will be some where there is nothing to do for a day or two. For example: you will be on call during lambing, and irrigation tasks depend on how much water we have. The overall expectation is that on average there will be between 10-20 hours of work each week.
We pay hourly starting at $15.00/hour. We will evaluate you every month with the possibility of pay increases as you take over more of the farming duties. Beginning farmers are encouraged to apply as well as more experienced farmers.
We are a no smoking environment. We also cannot allow any dogs on the property. You must also practice proper biosecurity between our animals and other animals on other farms. This means clean clothes and disinfected boots.
